xx Wikispaces - is it worth it?
« Thread started on: Oct 10th, 2016, 9:26pm »

As many of you will remember, when Wikispaces started charging for their services about two years ago there was speculation that they would soon increase their prices because of the captive market. This year they are charging $100 for a year's subscription, which I think is something like double what it was two years ago.

The reason Wikispaces have us 'over a barrel' is that it is the only Wiki provider which supports syntax colouring for BBC BASIC listings, something that is quite valuable. But at what point does the cost outweigh the benefit?

I would be interested in people's opinions on whether the Wikispaces subscription should be maintained, and if so how it should be paid for.

Richard.

Can you not just make the information a part of the built in help section of BBC4W and allow it to accept updates when you make changes. I believe this was done for the LB community.. They made (I believe) a local CHM file or something like that. But someone had made a program that extracted all the information and made the file, so people no longer had to go online to view help subjects.

Would it not be easy to take the information in the wiki and put it in a html file?.

No, you've got the wrong end of the stick. The information concerned was never online, it was (and is) supplied with LB. The tool you mention simply converts that supplied Help documentation to a more accessible and searchable form, on the user's own PC. It's unrelated to a shared, online, resource such as a wiki.

Incidentally the "someone" you mention was me! I created the tool for converting the LB docs from HTML to CHM (subsequently somebody else did the same thing, but mine was first).

I think you misunderstand what a wiki is - it's a place where anybody can add or amend information; it's essentially a collaborative endeavour. Indeed the whole reason for the wiki concept being created was to enable an online document to be edited in a simple way, without having to learn HTML.

Converting the wiki to HTML would be a backwards step, returning us to a stage when just one person (Who? Certainly not me!) would be responsible for adding to, maintaining and editing the information that's currently in the wiki.

A complete non-starter, sorry.

Indeed a Wiki is a collaborative endeavour and therefore, when it costs money I see no reason why its members should not also collaborate to contribute!

I.e. each potential member should donate, let's say, $2 for a years subscription.
Can't speak for others but the benefit (read: support) I get for difficult issues through this board is invaluable..... or, for sure worth a annual small fee.

When purchasing BB4W, Richard claims that "purchase is 'for life': upgrades and bug-fixes are free, forever!". So that's still correct.

In addition to also get lightning fast support by either Richard or knowledgeable members, the fee is $2 a year.
Where can I sign in?

Well I see no problem with that. Perhaps it should be set up for a subscription option for users. Perhaps PayPal? Suggesting that contributions keep the wiki active, would be good incentive.
I am feeling you would want the community to take care of the wiki fees.

Or perhaps if it is an issue of the wiki being a distraction, or burden, then perhaps it needs a different provider that allows the content to be presented for free with no colors.

(this was mentioned also) Then it can be as an additional source of reference and have little maintenance.

*** Another option would be to take the information, make it into a CHM file and abandon the wiki and use the forums for additional works.

I am working on a solution for the wiki and will let you see the results as soon as I am done. I know what to do.

Update: The wiki is HUGE.. There are apps that can copy the entire wiki and put it on a virtual website on your computer.
Of course, the apps cost money. The biggest thing is finding one that is safe to use.

I am quite happy with the solution discussed at Groups.io. Having discovered that 'organisers' have access to the subscription page it's no longer a problem.

Ok. I was unsure of what was happening. I will look at the options. I will need to make a wiki account and look it over.

Of course it all depends on people's professed generosity turning into real money!
